[Class 123 (ii)] A steam boiler comprises a vertical combustion chamber 10 locating a vertical cylindrical steam and water drum 15 at its upper end and an annular manifold 19 at its lower end, said drum and manifold being connected by a bank of steam generating tubes 20 lining the combustion chamber and by an axial downcomer 22 with branch pipes 29. A baffle having an upper cylindrical portion 31 and a lower conical portion 31a is axially disposed within the chamber 10 and serves to deflect the combustion gases from the burners 18 outwardly on to the tubes 20 and away from the downcomer 22, and, preferably, the parts of the tube 20 in the annular passageway between the baffle portion 31 and the wall of the chamber are provided with radial fins 20a. Feedwater is supplied to the drum 15 through a pipe 21 which terminates near the upper end of the downcomer 22, vertical bafflles 27 being fitted in the bottom of the drum to prevent vortexing of the water, and steam is withdrawn through a pipe 23. The combustion chamber 10 has a lining of insulating material 16 and refractory firebrick 17, is provided with observation ports 28 in its sides, and is surmounted by a flue 12 fitted with a chimney or stack 13.
