[Class 123 (ii)] A vertical water tube boiler comprises a furnace 11, a water space 12 with feed inlet 13, a steam chest 20, a series of water tubes 15 which are grouped together in the form of a cylinder between end plates 14, 16 constituting the lower and upper boundaries of a chamber 17 through which furnace gases circulate from a central opening 18 in the furnace 11 to outlets 19 in the chamber 17, and an annular return water passage 23 surrounding the said chamber. The passage 23 is built up of flanged frustoconical rings 27 to the shape shown, the part 24 directing the return water into contact with the hot wall of the chamber 17 and the part 25 forming a deflecting baffle for the furnace gases within said chamber. Steam is withdrawn from the boiler through a pipe 35 located within a tubular member 33 which extends through the steam chest 20 and into the chamber 17 where its lower end is closed, openings 36 being provided in the member 33, which serves as a superheater, for the passage of steam to said pipe 35. As shown, the member 33 is fitted with a valve 38 for supply. ing water thereto, e.g. when starting up the boiler, in order to prevent damage to same by excessive heat. A tubular smoke box (not shown) may be mounted on a projecting ridge 21 of the water passage 23 and coaxially over the steam chest 20 for conducting the furnace gases from the outlets 19 to a main flue.
