Abstract
8232. Lester, J. H., and Mills, E. C. April 6. Vertical boilers.-In vertical boilers in which the gases pass downwards through the smoketubes from an immersed combustion - chamber and furnace above the tubes, means are provided whereby the water, which enters the boiler at the lowest point, is caused to circulate mainly in an upward direction, and is limited or restricted in its circulation. In Fig. I., the water space of the boiler is shown fitted with partitions E, which leave a small annular space around each smoke tube. In Fig. II., long annular spaces are formed around the smoketubes by tubes F carried by the partitions E. The internal parts of the boiler may be so constructed and connected in place that the combustion chamber and tubes C can be withdrawn bodily. The smoke-box D, Fig. II., can also be withdrawn with the tubes C. The central smoke-tube c<1>, Fig. I., is preferably of large diameter, and is fitted with an adjustable plug d', which allows the removal of the flue dust and prevents a too free passage of the gases. The cover b<3> of the combustion-chamber is bolted in position. In a modification, the vertical shell has an horizontal extension containing the furnace.
