8566. Alley, S. E. April 14. Vertical boiltrs for motor wagons &c. Boilers of the type shown in Fig. 1 are fired from the top through a central tube A, passing downwards between the water tubes and closed at the top by a loose cover a. The water tubes D, E are slightly inclined and are arranged in horizontal rows crossing each other at right-angles. Gutter-shaped extensions e direct the water through the tubes. The inner shell b<1> is curved or flared outwardly at the top, forming an enlarged smoke-box, and thus facilitating the escape of the gases to the chimney C : or the inner shell may be continued above the top of the boiler, as shown in Fig. 3. A superheating coil F may surround the firing tube A.
