Vertical water - tube boilers; flues, i n t e r n a l. - The boiler consists of a lower water space b and an upper water and steam space a, which are connected together by water tubes f arranged in the combustion chamber d. A larger central water tube g, which is preferably of elliptical section, acts as a baffle in. directing the furnace gases among the tubes The fire - box c, which may be of the usual hemispherical form, communicates with the combustion chamber by a flue h, preferably elliptical, or otherwise transversely elongated. The tubes nearer the flue h become more strongly heated than the remainder, thus maintaining the circulation of the water. The steam receiver is provided with a suitable manhole or handhole, and is made of sufficient depth to allow the tubes to be withdrawn. Specifications No. 4650, A.D. 1893, No. 2616, A.D. 1896, and No. 3293, A.D. 1879, are mentioned.
