Abstract

27,018. Trevithick, A. E. Dec. 27. Locomotive - type boilers; fire-boxes; superheaters, steam. -The water chamber A, Fig. 1, forming the back end of the fire-box is connected with the main water space by tubes a preferably inclined These tubes are arranged in two horizontal rows above the bridge C and in two vertical rows, one on each side, as shown in Fig. 2. Pipes a<1> connect the bottom of the chamber A with the barrel ; a plate b<2> ensures the water -being drawn from the forward end. The lower part.of the fire-box is lined with fire-clay c<2>, and the shell is further protected by asbestos c<3>. Above the fire-clay lining is a baffle, and below it are air-inlet chambers perforated on their inner surfaces. In the upper part of the fire-box and above the tubes a is a superheater d, consisting preferably of U-tubes connected to headers d<1>, d<3>. A baffle-plate c, with door c' for the passage of the furnace gases, is fitted between the tubes a and the superheater ; or suitably-formed tiles may be fitted on some of the tubes. The furnace gases reach the smokebox through pipes f controlled by slides f<2>. The superheater may be removed through a door c'.
