Steam-generator furnaces.-The Cochran vertical boiler is modified for use in steam motor-cars for railways or, according to the Provisional Specification, in locomotives. In the form of boiler shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the firebox, surrounded by a water space C, extends into a combustion chamber F, having an asbestos lining and closed at the top by a diaphragm I. The charging-hole U of the firebox is opposite and similar to the discharge E to the combustion chamber, and is formed on the inclined surface of the boiler. Gases pass into this chamber through tubes H to a smoke-box G, and forward through tubes H' into a space J above the combustion chamber F, whence they pass into the smoke-stack K. The steam space Q is provided with a manhole T and gusset plates S. In some cases, the chamber. J may not extend beyond the boiler and the stack may pass through the steam space. The diaphragm I may be provided with a bye-pass valve operated through levers N by a handle, as shown in Fig. 5, for use when starting the fire. The smoke-box G is provided with doors Y immediately over the charging-hole U of the furnace, which is closed by sliding doors U<1> operated through levers by a handle W. Ashpit doors X and cleaning-doors are provided. A baffle-plate Z' is also used.
