682,033. Cyclone furnaces. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Sept. 29,1950 [July 8,1949], No. 23863/50. Class 51 (i) A cyclone furnace having an upright axis comprises an upper cylindrical part 1 having one or more tangential inlets for the pulverised fuel and air mixture and a gas outlet 5 terminating in the floor of the secondary combustion chamber of a tubular boiler, and a lower conical part 3 having a cylindrical extension 12 communicating with an air supply duct 13 and with a housing 17 dipping into a water-filled ash trough 16. The furnace is lined with water tubes 7 and 10 and a duct 15 carries re-circulated hot combustion gases to the duct 13 the air supply to which is controlled by a valve 14. An internal gas circulation downwardly adjacent the conical surface of the part 3 and upwardly in an axial direction tends to prevent fines in the fuel from passing out with the liquid slag into the trough 16.
