Class 75(i) [Also in Group XII] A burner for gaseous, liquid, or solid fuel comprises a tuyere 10, Fig. 1, through elongated openings 20 between the generally tangential blades 18 of which air, supplied under low pressure to a casing 11, passes to form a hollow vortex which entrains fuel supplied through the lower ends of the openings 20 from a surrounding pan 12. The latter is either fed by gravity from a liquid fuel tank 15, or. with gaseous fuel by a blower, or with pulverulent fuel by a screw conveyer. The swirling fuelair mixture passes into a furnace through an opening in a refractory wall 28, said opening having a paraboloidal wall surface 29. Fig. 3 shows a burner mounted in the side wall of a furnace, primary air being supplied through a duct 34 to a horizontal tuyere 32 having a fuel-feeding member 33 supplied through pipes 60, 61, and 39 with either gaseous or liquid fuel or a mixture thereof. To ensure even distribution of the air passing into the tuyere 32 the latter is provided with two banks of blades 32a, 32b, and a cylindrical skirt 54 divides the airflow at the junction of the blades. The primary air passes also through apertures in an annular plate 32a at the end of the duct 34. Secondary air, controlled by a rotary hit-and-miss device 50, 51 in a windbox 35, is passed into the ,combustion chamber through apertures 46a in a refractory block 46. In Fig. 7 is shown a boiler incorporating a tuyere 86 supplied with fuel and air through a pipe 87 and a conduit 88. Combustion takes place in a refractory throat 90 and the combustion products pass to a stack 78 through a chamber.74 and tubes 76 within a water drum 72, thus heating the water to produce steam in a dome 81.
