Gaseous and pulverulent fuel furnaces; ashpits; casings; cooling. - In an apparatus for burning powdered or gaseous fuel comprising a vertical combustion chamber 1 having a burner 12 at the upper end and a lateral outlet 2 for the combustion products at a lower level, the wall of the chamber is jacketed by a metal air heating casing 4, from which air is led by a connection 16 to the burners, and is also introduced into the chamber at a number of points through nozzles 20. Air is supplied to the casing by a fan 13, and in the powdered fuel apparatus shown a part of the heated air is delivered through ports 23 to the ashpit 7 and is deflected by a plate 25 into contact with the walls, which are thereby protected from erosion by falling ash. The lower part of the furnace is formed with an overhanging ledge 6. which deflects the ascending air currents inwards. The lateral outlet 2 is also jacketted and may have end air delivery ports 26. The ports 20 and 26 may be directed obliquely to impart a whirling motion to the gases. Fuel mixed with air is delivered by the pipe 11 to an annular conduit 18 surrounding the central duct 17 for hot air from the casing 4, and below the delivery orifices of these passages is a vertically adjustable cone 32, which may be perforated or may have flutings on its upper surface to give a whirling motion to the mixture of fuel and air. The combustion chamber may have two or more outlets supplying a corresponding number of flues in the steam generator. Specification 289.502 is referred to in the first Provisional Specification.
