[Class 64(i)] [Also in Group XII] An external solid fuel furnace adapted for connection, by a tube 11, to a boiler or other heatutilising apparatus, comprises a vertical cylindrical water-jacketed combustion chamber 1 fed with fuel from a hopper 5 through a tube 6, fitted with a rotary cut-off valve 8, and provided with one or more air-supply tuyeres 9 connected through a wind-box 10 with a fan 30. The tube 6 is formed with a sliding plate 6<1>, Fig. 5, which may be adjusted to vary the height of the upper end of the sloping fuel-bed c and thus the thickness of the layer covering the tuyere 9. The latter, in the form shown in Fig. 2, consists of a one-piece metal unit having superposed plates or webs between which are slots 9<1>, 9<3> for delivering the air into the fuel-bed in parallel horizontal sheets. In a modification, the webs or plates are hollow and traversed by cooling water supplied from the bottom jacket 4 and escaping to the outlet pipe of the boiler to which the furnace is connected. In another construction, the fuel tube 6 is arranged centrally above a tuyere having superposed plates or webs spaced to provide a series of air delivery slots along each side. Fig. 3 shows the circumferential position of the tuyere 9 in relation to the outlet tube 11 and a cleaning door 20, the natural gas flow towards the outlet 11 ensuring that there is no flame return towards the door 20. Constructions are also described in which two and three tuyeres 9 are provided at spaced points around the wall of the combustion chamber. The outlet tube 11, as shown in Fig. 9, comprises an outer casing 17, communicating with the atmosphere through a balanced valve 18 and also having a connection to the fan 30, and an inner structure having an air-preheating section 15, in communication with the outer jacket 17, and a delivery section 16, the inner wall 14 of the latter being of conical form and arranged to provide apertures 13 through which the secondary air delivered from the pre-heating section 15 is directed into the stream of combustion gases.
