754,281. Steam boiler furnaces. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING, Inc. June 28, 1954 [July 27, 1953], No. 18853/54. Class 51(1). [Also in Group XIII] A water-tube steam boiler comprises a furnace 10 having water-cooled walls 20 and fired by four sets 11 ... 14 of corner-mounted, tangential-firing burners 15 which are arranged so that they can be tilted up or down and swung in horizontal planes to vary the position of the combustion zone. Combustion gases discharge from the top of the furnace through a lateral pass locating a reheater 23 and superheater 22 and leading to a down pass containing an economizer 24, the gases being withdrawn from the downpass through an air heater 26 by an induced draught fan 30. To supplement the final steam temperature, control provided by regulation of the degree of tilt or swing of the burners, cool flue gas withdrawn from the down pass by a variable speed fan 34 is injected into the furnace through two sets 17, 18 of cornermounted, tangentially directed, independently tiltable nozzles 16 disposed respectively above and below the burner sets to vary the quantity and temperature of the gases entering the superheater pass. The two sets 17, 18 of recirculated gas nozzles may be used individually, the fresh combustion gases being forced towards the water walls when only the lower nozzles are used so that the gas temperature at the furnace outlet is reduced and being screened from the walls by a blanket of flue gas with consequent increase in gas outlet temperature when only the upper nozzles are used. In a modification, a single set of gas nozzles located between the burner sets 11, 12 and 13,14 is provided. U.S.A. Specifications 2,229,643, 2,243,909, 2,363,875 and 2,640,468 are referred to.
