Abstract

748,322. Combustion apparatus. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. April 30, 1954 [April 30, 1953], No. 12584/54. Class 51(1). [Also in Group XIII] A water-tube boiler has a furnace 10 equipped with a lower group 74a and an upper group 74b of corner-mounted, tangential firing, tilting burners fed with pulverised fuel from mills 70 and supplied with secondary air by a fan 78. Combustion gases leave the furnace through a lateral pass 26 and downpass 28 locating steam heaters 64, 54, 69. In addition to the superheat temperature control provided by adjustment of the tilt of the burners and the quantity of water supplied to attemperators, control is also provided by varying the heat content of the gases leaving the furnace by the recirculation thereto of cool flue gas withdrawn from the bottom of the downpass and delivered through ducts 90, 92 to inlet chambers 94, each of which is associated with a burner of the groups 74a, 74b. From each chamber 94 a stream of flue gas enters the furnace through a vertically elongated outlet port located alongside the burner, the port having a baffle which diverts the stream along the adjacent furnace wall to form a moving blanket of gas thereon screening the furnace wall tubes from radiation and raising the heat content of the gas leaving the furnace. Specification 642,671 is referred to.
