Abstract

523,871. Steam generator and superheater furnaces. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd., and LULY, E. L, Jan. 17, 1939, No. 1642. [Class 51 (i)] [Also in Group XIII] A steam or vapour generator has associated therewith an independently fired steam or vapour heater, the gases from the steam or vapour generator and steam or vapour heater being led to a common heat exchanger and cooled after which they are led to the vapour heater to prevent overheating. As shown in the Figure, pulverized fuel is fed to the combustion chamber 129 of a steam generator by burners 131, the combustion products passing in a downward direction and beneath the lower end of a water-cooled partition 128 after which they pass upwardly through a pass 130 to heat vapour generating tubes 110, superheater tubes 119, 120 and economiser tubes 123, 124. From the bottom of the downflow passage in which the economiser tubes are arranged the gases flow into a space 125 and thence upwardly to an air heater 126. A pulverized fuel furnace 150 supplies hot gases for reheating steam in tubes 154, 155, the gases being afterwards led through a passage 158 to the furnace of the steam generator where they mix with the combustion gases therein and enter the pass 130. A fan 159 supplies air to. the preheater 126 from which it passes through a trunk 160 to the burners 131 of the steam generator furnace and through a trunk 161 to the reheater furnace 150 where it provides primary and secondary air for the pulverized fuel burners 151. Air also passes from the trunk 161 to a manifold 167 leading air to a space 169 surrounding the furnace from which it passes through openings 170, 171 in the furnace wall to the combustion chamber. A fan 172 withdraws gases from the space 125 and delivers them through a conduit 173 and under control of dampers 174, 175, 176 to the exit 153 of the furnace, to the space 169 and to the air supply manifold 162 leading to the furnace. The gases may be controlled automatically. A modification is also described and shown similar to that described in Specification 523,872. Specification 373,860, [Group XIII], also is referred to.
