[Also in Group XIII] In a water tube steam boiler comprising high and low temperature superheaters 31, 32 located in a convection pass 30 at the outlet from the upper part of a vertical furnace 22 which is lined with steam generating tubes 20 extending between headers 14, 16, 18 and a steam and water drum 10 tangentially fired by corner mounted, tiltable burners 28 the tilt of which is regulated to control the superheat temperature, the burners are mounted on axes T, T, Fig. 3, disposed at an angle A to the horizontal H-H so that they tilt in a plane which is tangential to the conical surface of an imaginary cone located in the furnace chamber, see Figs. 1 and 2. With this arrangement the diameter of the upper firing circle U is about one third that of the lower firing circle L. The increase in firing circle diameter as the burners tilt downwardly overcomes the disadvantage which exists when a constant diameter firing circle is used that a downward tilt from the horizontal does not cause as much gas temperature variation as an equal upward tilt.
