Abstract

852,498. Pulverulent fuel furnaces; liquid or gaseous fuel furnaces. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING Inc. Dec. 8, 1958 [Dec. 12, 1957; Dec. 17, 1957], No. 39450/58. Class 51 (1). [Also in Group XIII] A tubulous vapour generator is fired by at least three rows of tilting burners directing streams of fuel and air to converge on an axis transverse to the general direction of flow of the combustion gases in the chamber, or tangentially to an imaginary surface of revolution about that axis. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, two vertically spaced horizontal rows of pulverulent fuel burners 10 on each of the front and back walls of an upright tube lined steam generator are directed tangentially to an imaginary horizontal firing cylinder 75. In each row the burners 10 alternate with tiltable air inlet nozzles, and the direction of each burner of a row is separately adjustable. By adjusting all the burners of a row in the same manner, the burning gas mass may be moved within the furnace, or the diameter of the imaginary firing cylinder changed. By adjusting each burner of a row separately, the imaginary firing cylinder may be tilted, or alternate burners may be adjusted to give oppositely rotating gas streams. The direction of the individual burners in each row may be controlled by thermostats located in the individual elements of the superheater S1 so that the temperature of the gases leaving the furnace are maintained constant over the width of the furnace. In another embodiment, Fig. 22, two burners 95, 96 in the front wall of a low head horizontally arranged steam generator co-operate with a burner 97 in the roof and a burner 98 in the rear wall to form a gas mass rotating about a horizontal axis. Three burners only may be used, Fig. 23, not shown. In an upright steam generator, four rows of burners on each of the front and rear walls may be arranged so that the upper pair of burner rows on each wall are directed tangentially to an upper firing cylinder and the remaining burners deliver tangentially to a lower firing cylinder. The direction of rotation of the two gas masses formed may be same or opposite.
