Abstract
727,708. Water-tube steam boilers; steam superheaters. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. July 23, 1953, No. 20464/53. Classes 123 (2) and 123 (3). A steam boiler comprises a cyclone furnace 1, for example as described in Specification 552,747, [Group XII], arranged to discharge combustion gases into a secondary furnace 2 leading from which is an upright radiation chamber 3, a lateral pass 4, housing one section 22 of a convection superheater, leading from the top of chamber 3 to a downpass 5 in which is located the other convection superheater sections 23, 24 and 25. Furnaces 1 and 2 and chamber 3 are lined with steam generating tubes which extend via intermediate collectors 11 and 12 from a water drum 6 to a steam and water drum 7. Within chamber 3 is disposed a radiant superheater 16- consisting of widelyspaced panels formed of nested single-bend U-tubes, the ends of which connect into a divided header 17, 18. The panels extend into the high temperature region of chamber 3 below a throat 14 formed therein so that high superheat temperatures may be attained, overheating of the tube metal in this region being prevented by a covering 21 of refractory material.
