Abstract

575,083. Vertical steam boilers. FLEMING, S. W. C. Feb. 28, 1944, No. 3621. [Class 123 (ii)] In a steam boiler comprising a lower water space 8 and an upper steam and water space 12 which are connected by an internal downcomer 2 and surrounding water tubes 6 located in an intermediate combustion chamber 3 which is provided with an inlet or flue 9, leading from a furnace 7, and an external uptake 10b, the downcomer 2 is of cylindrical form and has its axis offset from that of the combustion chamber 3 and towards the uptake 10b so that the effective cross-sectional area of the chamber 3 reduces as between the flue 9 and uptake 10b to maintain uniform the speed of the combustion gases through said chamber. The shell 1b of the combustion chamber is lined with firebricks 14 ; firebricks 13 are also lined around the downcomer 2 in proximity to flue 9. Feed-water may be supplied to the boiler by a pipe 23 which extends through the water space 8 and rises up the side of the downcomer 2 to terminate in arcuate perforated arms 24 extending around part of the main periphery of the upper end of said downcomer.
