Abstract

960,333. Sectional boilers. W. MITTELMANN, [trading as MITTELMANN FABRIK MODERNER BADEOFEN GEB.]. Oct. 19, 1962 [Oct. 19, 1961], No. 39680/62. Heading F4A. A sectional boiler which can be fired by solid fuel and/or by liquid or gaseous fuels is built up of a number of steel sections of the form shown in Fig. 3 to provide a lower combustion chamber 3 for oil or gas fired through a burner 5, a middle combustion chamber 8 having a grate 31 for solid fuel, e.g. coke, and an upper chamber 9 in which may be disposed a water preheater 19, the sections being connected by nipples 2. The furnace 3 has a refractory lining 4 provided with apertures 6 coinciding with gas flues provided between the abutting sections in the region of the middle chamber 8, these flues being formed by providing a constricted profile 30 for the sections in this region, for example, as shown in Fig. 12, so that flues 7 are formed when the sections are placed together. Gases flow from the chamber 3 through the apertures 6 and upwardly in the flues 7 into the chamber 9 and thence to a chimney through a connection 11. Gases from the solid fuel furnace 8, when it is being used in conjunction with the oil or gas-fired furnace, flow directly to an outlet 12 to a separate chimney. When the solid fuel furnace only is being used the direct connection to the chimney outlet 12 is replaced by a T-piece 14 shown in Fig. 1, an extension 16 leading the gases into the furnace 3, the chimney outlet 12 having been closed by a sliding damper 13. The gases flow from the furnace 3 by way of the apertures 6 and flues 7 into the chamber 9 to discharge into the first chimney through the outlet 11. In modifications, Figs. 7 to 11 and 13 (not shown), the constriction 30 in the section profile may have various forms.
