Classes 64(i) and 123(ii) In a steam or hot-water boiler comprising a combustion chamber B disposed within a horizontal cylindrical casing A so as to form an annular water space C, a front hot gas space F, and a rear hot gas space which is divided into an upper chamber G and a lower chamber H which open into the combustion chamber B and an escape flue K respectively, and side and bottom fire tubes L (not shown), L' connecting the front hot gas space F with the top and bottom rear chambers G, H respectively, vertical water tubes E extend through the combustion chamber B and a furnace or burner chamber having a hearth D with raised sides and back is provided in the front end of the combustion chamber. The tubes may have longitudinal convolutions so that the hot gases travel to and fro through the boiler.
