Dec. 1, 1930, No. 36133. [Classes 64 (i), 64 (iii), and 123 (ii).] In a boiler for heating water and generating lowpressure steam, and consisting of a water-jacketed firebox having water-holding chambers extending thereinto, the chambers 4 extend over the entire length and the greater part of the height of the boiler and communicate freely at the top and the rear with water chambers 1, 2. A collecting- chamber 9 for the flue gases is situated entirely in the water chamber 12, and the return water is conducted directly into the hollow firebars 5 communicating with water chambers 2, 3. The chambers 4 may also extend over the entire height of the boiler and the furnace door 17 may be replaced by a water-holding wall connected to the chambers 4 and chambers 1, 3. There are no hollow grate-bars in this construction and water to be heated enters the bottom of the two chambers 3 and is constrained to rise through chambers 4 by a distributing plate which closes the water-holding walls of the firebox for vertical flow. If the boiler is heated by means such as a gas flame the bottom plate of the boiler casing leaves a gap for combustion air. The boiler may also be heated by steam or hot water passing in countercurrent to the water to be heated, in which case the bottom plate is fixed in a watertight manner.
