Air supply, heating; furnace fronts.-In watertube steam-boilers adapted to be heated by liquid or solid fuel, the ash-pit spaces are provided with diaphragms or division plates c, Figs. 1 and 2, to form longitudinal channels arranged beneath the burners n. The space beneath the plates c forms an air-heating conduit from which the air passes through openings d' in the boiler casing to the hollow furnace front e and through valves f to the burners. When the furnace is to be converted from liquid to solid-fuel firing, the front plate g, which carries the Venturi tube i surrounding, the burner n, is removed and the usual fire-door opening is formed by the plates k, l and air-supply boxes o, p.
