CORNELIS ZULVER, OF LONDON, AND LAUNCELOT EUSTACE SMITH, OF SOUTH SHIELDS, ENGLAND. J
FURNACE-FRONT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 11, 1919. Serial No. 316,733.
T 0 all whom it may concern. 7
Be it known that we, ConNnLrs ZULVER, a subject of the Queen of t re Netherlands, engineer, of St. Helens Court, Great S Helens, in the city of London, England, and LAUNOELOT Eusraon SMITH, a subject of the King of Great Britain, managing director Smiths Dock Company Limited, High Doc-ks, South Shields, in the county of Durham, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in F urnace-F rents, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to natural draft steam boiler and other furnace fronts of the kind adapted for using either solid fuel or liquid fuel. or both kinds of fuel at the same time, and that can be quickly changed from solid to liquid fuel, or vice versa without having to disconnect any fittings to allow of the change being made.
Our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a face View of the boiler front having one half of the front plate removed.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line X, X, Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 a vertical central section.
Fig. 4: is a section similar to Fig. '2, illus-' trating a slight modification.
The air for combustion is admitted through openings A, A in the front plate of the furnace front, each of which openings is controlled by any suitable form of door or damper B. The air supply on passing the opening A, enters a heating chamber C formed between the front plate and a baffle C. D, E are projecting vanes and guides by which the air is guided to an opening F leading into the air tube F which contains the oil burner Gr. One such burneris provided on each side of, the furnace front. The vanes D, E of which there may be more than two if desired, serve to cause the air supply to pass over the whole of the heating surface of the chamber C before entering the tubes F, and so insures sufiicient heating of the air. Preferably a division rib N is arranged at the top of the chamber C to form two independent heating compartments to allow of separately adjusting the air supply to the two burners. H is the burner holder which may be of any suitable type.
In the modified arrangement shown in Fig. at the air tubes F are made as separate castings mounted inthe furnace front.
J is the usual coal door, and K the ashpit damper.
When burning oil alone the firebars L may be protected by firebrick slabs M or by broken bricks.
The oil burners are provided with the usual pipes and connections, as will be well understood.
What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A furnace front having a frontplate and i a baffle plate rearwardly thereof, the space between said plates forming an air heating chamber around an opening for solid fuel, concentric vanes on the inner faceof said back plate forming air channels between air supply openings provided in the front plate, air tubes transversely disposed in said air heating chamber, and liquid fuel burners mounted in said air tubes.
