Grates; air supply, regulating.-In a furnace of the kind in which air for combustion passes through hollow fire-bars before entering the ashpit, air under high pressure is supplied by a pipe 11 to an air-inducing device 15 leading to the front part of the ash-pit at 23 and to a pipe 9 communicating with a pipe 8 arranged at the front ends of hollow reciprocating fire-bars 1. Air from the pipe 8 is supplied through flexible pipes 6 to the channels 2 formed in the fire-bars, such channels delivering air through exits 39 to a chamber 17 leading through a damper-controlled passage to the chamber 41 at the rear of the ash-pit, or through exits 38 leading direct into the chamber 41. The air also passes from the chamber 17 to hollow frames arranged at the sides of the grate and enters the ash-pit through orifices such as 26. If desired, one or more additional passages 40 allow air to pass from the hollow fire-bars into the front chamber 43 or to an intermediate chamber 42. In a modification, air is supplied direct to the chamber 43 and may be led from this chamber to the hollow bars through passages 45.
