Grates; fire-bridges. -- In a furnace grate of the kind in which the fire-bars are provided with conical or tapering apertures adapted to form passages when the bars are arranged side by side through which air and steam are delivered to the furnace, the passages d, Fig. 1, formed by the bars c are choked by plates f provided with apertures g, which are smaller than the apertures in the bars c, so as to restrict the supply of air and steam passing from one part of the passage to the next. The blast supplied to the passages d may be passed through the bridge h. The bars c are clamped together by rods provided with springs m to allow for expansion of the bars.
