Abstract
27,802. Cass, A. T., and Isherwood, J. Dec. 3. Fire-bars and grates,-The back bearer of movable fire-bars is cooled in order to prevent burning of the rear ends of the bars by steam, air, &c., which, after leaving the bearer, is admitted to the fire to increase the draught. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the bearer f has cast within it a coil of pipe, and steam &c. supplied thereto is led either directly, or after passing through a coil in the flue, to the front of the furnace, where it enters the hollow fire-bars at h, and issues into the fire at openings b or elsewhere. In a modification, Fig. 5, the steam &c. is admitted to the hollow bars at a point k between their ends. Where the bars are solid the steam &c. is admitted near to or between them.
