Fire-bars are constructed so that the air passages between or in them are partly vertical and partly inclined so as to direct the uprising air to the sides of the furnace. Fig. 1 shows the central part of a grate of longitudinal bars a, a<1>, and Fig. 4 shows the central part of a bar forming part of a grate of transverse bars, in each case air-passages a<2>of the kind described being formed. The central bar a<1>, Fig. 1, may have air-passages a<4>, Fig. 7, or may have notched edges. The transverse bars may be supported by ledges g engaging with grooved parts h on the framework k surrounding the fire-grate, one or more central bars o being fitted when the bars are in two or more lengths.
