Abstract

Firebridges.-A secondary grate 7 is arranged behind the main grate 5 and fire-bridge 6, and at the rear of the, secondary grate means are provided for admitting heated air into the furnace in a direction opposed to the flow of the gases from the main grate. Air is supplied by a. pipe 12 to an air heating chamber 11 behind the secondary grate surmounted by a refractory block 13 with forwardly inclined passages 14 directing a stream of air towards the crown of the furnace. The secondary grate comprises perforated blocks of refractory material resting upon apertured plates at the top of a chamber 8 to which air is admitted by a sliding door 9 operated from the front of the furnace by a rod 10. Steam may be supplied with the air to the chamber 11 and means may be provided for shaking parts of the secondary grate to clear it of grit &c.
