Abstract
460,494. Refuse-consuming furnaces. GREENAWALT, J. E. June 29, 1936, No. 18050. [Class 51 (i)] In a refuse - consuming furnace particularly of the kind described in Specification 388,074, a pneumatic seal is provided at the joint between the travelling grate and side walls of the furnace to prevent the escape of gases from the combustion chamber. As shown in Figs. 2 and 4, tuyeres are arranged along the sides of the combustion chamber between the lower edges 16 of the side walls W and the upper edges 3<1> of the travelling grate 3. The tuyeres comprise upper and lower members 17, 22, the upper members 17 being bolted to angle irons 19 and the lower members being secured to the upper members by studs 23. Air supplied by mains 40 passes through valve-controlled pipes 41 to the lower tuyere members 22 and thence to longitudinal passages 29, 36 from which it issues through inclined passages 30, 37 into the combustion chamber. The air issuing through the passages 30 drives back any noxious gases tending to escape to the atmosphere, while the air issuing through the passages 37 serves to support combustion.
