266,923. Smallwood, A., and Fallon, J. April 6, 1926. Addition to 255,938. Crucible furnaces.-Furnaces as described in the parent Specification are modified so that the flame is directed laterallv into the reverberatorv working chamber, the down-draught conduit b for combustion air terminating in a combustion chamber b<3> which converges in a horizontal direction, as shown in plan in Fig. 2, towards the working chamber k and contains a fluid fuel burner a'. The waste gases pass along each side of the combustion, chamber b<3> to vertical conduits d located on each side of the air conduit b. In a modification the burner is arranged horizontally in. the lower part of the air conduit b, and a number of crucibles are arranged in the working chamber. Fig. 6 shows a form adapted to heat a single crucible m in which the air conduit b diverges at b<1> to the point at which the vertical burner a<2> is placed and converges at b<2> to the point at which it joins tangentially the working chamber k<2>, the hot gases passing around the crucible and through a conduit d<2> to the updraught presages d.
