Smoke, consuming; air, supplying; crowns and roofs; pulverulent and liquid fuel furnaces.-In a chain grate or other furnace the products of combustion are drawn from beneath the arch d<1>, Fig. 1, through one or more conduits f, g and delivered into the combustion chamber c at a height above its base which is at least equal to the length of the combustion chamber as measured from the rear end of the arch d<1> to the rear wall y. The vertical portion of the conduit is provided with partitions k. An air-cooled damper j<1> controls the gases. A damper-controlled air-inlet h<11> is provided in the furnace wall adjacent to the discharge opening h of the conduit. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the gases are impelled through the conduit by air supplied by a blower p and delivered through a pipe o terminating near the discharge end of the conduit g. The air may be carried through pipes or coils q contained within or around a chamber r forming part of the conduit through which the gases are drawn. In a further modification the air is heated by passing it through a conduit adjacent to the front of the ignition wall e of the arch and thence through a baffled casing surrounding the chamber r.. Fig. 6 shows a furnace in which solid fuel is burnt on the grate a and pulverulent liquid or gaseous fuel is supplied from a burner x.
