Fire-bridges; smoke, consuming; baffles.-In a boiler furnace, the fire-bridge B is arranged a short distance away from the back firebar bearer a which carries a damper a<1> for controlling the supply of air from the ash-pit to beyond the grate. The fire-bridge B is provided with a chamber b<2> to which air and combustion products are admitted through openings in the front wall of the fire-bridge and from which they escape through a single opening b<1> to a combustion chamber C. The passage of flames and gases through the combustion chamber is retarded by a baffle D.
