Abstract

637,205. Sectional boilers. PITT, W., and BASSETT, E. J. Nov. 6, 1947, No. 29646. [Class 123(ii)] In a hot - water boiler in which a water-jacket 10 in the boiler walls encloses a combustion chamber 19 communicating with a flue or flues 17 at the top of the boiler, a substantial mass 30 of refractory material is arranged centrally of the chamber 19 so as to leave at each side a vertical combustion passage near the bottom of each of which is a gas burner 26. Apertured plates 24 extending from end to end of the combustion chamber separate the combustion spaces from the refractory material. Each burner plays a heating flame obliquely upwards against the adjacent boiler wall. The mass 30 consists of a stack of refractory balls, as shown, with holes 31, or, alternatively, of a stack of firebricks piled to form a solid body with narrow combustion spaces at the sides. Further refractory balls are located in the flues 17.
