Refuse-consuming furnaces.-In a shaft furnace for burning refuse the air for combustion flows down vertical passages in the furnace walls to openings in the combustion zone, the combustion gases escaping through other passages in the walls or through a central tube; water jets for breaking up the slag and preventing it from adhering to the walls are also provided. The air enters through collectors 7, passes down passages 8, where it is heated, and enters the furnace through openings 6. The combustion gases may either be drawn off through openings 11 and a collector 16, in which case they may be used for heating boilers, or, if combustible gases are required they are drawn off through openings 12, passages 18 and collectors 19. Movable slabs 14, 14a allow of the passages being closed to cause the gases to take the required course. Alternatively, both passages may be closed and the gases drawn off through a central tube 44. A further air supply may be introduced by a fan 36 under a cone 39. The slag is cooled and disaggregated by water admitted through jets 20 in the walls and a pipe 37 opening under the cone 39, the steam produced being drawn off through a hollow ring 24. A water jacket 40 prevents the slag from adhering to the walls of the furnace. The cooled slag falls on a rotary plate 27 and is removed by a scraper 31.
