Abstract

372,429. Rotary furnaces. PARKER, W., Cedar Cottage, River Mount, Walton-on- Thames, and DAVIS, L. S., 8, East Holme, Erith, Kent. Feb. 16, 1931, Nos. 4807 and 25658..[Class 51 (i).] A rotary furnace for burning fine solid fuel either alone or with gaseous fuel comprises a metallic shell lined with refractory material 11, Fig. 1, into which fuel and air are fed at one end through a shoot 25 and apertures 33 respectively, the lining being provided with ledges 12 by which the fuel is lifted and allowed to fall through the air current and the shell being surrounded by a jacket 26 through which air is drawn by a fan 29 and delivered into a casing 32 enclosing the apertures 33. The furnace is mounted on roller bearings and may be arranged horizontally or may be inclined downwardly towards the ash-discharge opening 21 behind which is a bridge 20. An insulating material may be arranged between the lining and metallic shell. Fuel is supplied to the shoot 25 from a rotary table 23 provided with adjustable scrapers 24 or alternatively the fuel may be supplied by a rotary drum the shaft of which is hollow and perforated for the admission of steam. The fuel shoot 25 passes through a stationary disc 34 at the front of the furnace such disc being also provided with air inlets. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which gas is supplied to the air casing 32 through a nozzle 50 and passes with the air through the openings 33. The centre of the casing comprises a door mounted in slotted hinges so that it may be pulled outwardly and then swung on its hinges to obtain access to the furnace. The furnace may be maintained at such a temperature that the ash is liquefied or it may be maintained below such a temperature. The furnace may be cylindrical or conical and may be oscillated. When applied to a Lancashire boiler, two rotary furnaces are arranged side by side and geared together, while in a water-tube boiler several furnaces may be employed.
