Crucible and melting-pot furnaces.-In a gasfired crucible or melting-pot furnace, of the kind in which the heat is generated at the upper part nf the furnace and the products of combustion are conducted around the crucible to a point below its base before reaching the flue, one or more inclined passages are provided in the lower part of the furnace connected at one end to the chimney flue, and formed at the other to allow the ready removal of any spilt metal. In the crucible furnace, Figs. 1 and 3, a combustible mixture is supplied through pipes i<2> to combnstion chambers i<1> opening tangentially and at different levels into the crucible chamber, and the heating-gases pass around the crucible and down to a diametral passage, one portion j<2> of which is connected to the chimney k while the other j' is closed by a plug and serves for the removal of spilt metal. The crucible is supported on a stand f bolted to the base-plate of the furnace, and the usual swivel feed tube l which can be raised and lowered by a pedal n is provided. Secondary air may be supplied to the combustion chambers through passages o. In the melting-pot furnace, Fig. 4, the combustion chambers r<1> are arranged radially and are supplied with a combustible mixture from Bunsen tubes x, and secondary air from valvecontrolled passages y. The pot t is supported by a flange and by radial blocks t<1>. In starting the furnace, gas may be burnt in the chimneyflue to create a draught.
