Abstract
347,174. Preheating and igniting fuel in furnaces. STOCKHOLMS AKTIEBOLAGET PRIVAT, 18, Regeringsgatan, Stockholm. Dec. 20, 1929, No. 39079. Convention date, Jan. 17. [Class 51 (i).] In furnaces in which the fuel has a progressive movement upon or over grates, particles of incandescent fuel or fuel residues are blown up through the front portion of the grate for igniting the fuel supplied by a hopper. Where the fuel is preheated or dried in a hopper, this may also be effected. by the incandescent particles. In the furnace shown in Fig. 1 having a travelling grate 7, a fan 6 draws incandescent particles with hot air and gases from the rear of the combustion chamber through a perforated channel 4 and delivers them through a pipe 7 to a spiral. housing 8 from which they are supplied through the front portion of the grate into the fuel layer supplied by the hopper 3. A preheating hopper 2 may be provided into which hot air and gases may be delivered in any known way. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, incandescent particles and gases are withdrawn from the rear of the furnace by a fan 6 through a pipe 4a, having an air inlet at 10; and delivered through pipes 7, 7a below the front portion of the grate and to the fuel hopper respectively. A fan 12 exhausts gases containing water vapour from the front part of the furnace through a pipe 16, having an air inlet connection at 15 and a connection 11 with the fuel hopper and delivers them through channels 13, 14 to the centre and rear of the grate. The invention is also described and shown as applied to a stationary inclined grate, the incandescent particles being withdrawn from various parts of the furnace flues, and as applied to an underfed grate in which the fuel is delivered to the centre of the grate by a screw and is then fed over lateral grates.
