Producers. - In apparatus for gasifying pulverulent or small coal while in suspension in an air or gas current rising through an opening 3, particles of dust carried out of the combustion chamber 1 are collected, while still glowing, in a separating chamber 7 where they are burnt or degasified by air supplied at 18. The coal sup-, plied at 2 slides down to the opening 3 where it. is picked up by the air blast supplied at 11 and travels in the direction of the arrows 12, returning towards the opening 3, and is either completely burnt or forms combustible gases. The heaviest particles fall to the grate 5 and are completely burnt. Particles carried off in the direction of the arrow 13 drop partly into a chamber 6 whence they are returned to the combustion chamber 1 through an opening 10 by a reciprocating wedge 9 and partly into the chamber 7 below which is a water-jacketed chamber 8 and a grate 15. In the chamber 8 the dust is burnt with air supplied at 18, combustible gases formed being burnt with the gases from the combustion chamber 1 by air supplied at 14. Radiated heat from the main gas current assists in keeping the dust in the chamber 8 in a glowing condition. The chamber 6 and water jacket 17 may be dispensed with and the opening 14 for secondary air arranged between the combustion chamber 1 and the separating chamber 7.
