Abstract

613,124. Generating combustion products under pressure. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, & CIE. Jan. 1, 1946, No. 115. Convention date, April 5, 1945. [Class 51(i)] In a method for producing hot combustion gases under pressure, a solid fuel bed has a gyratory and turbulent motion imparted to it by the blowing in of air or other suitable gas. Fuel, e.g., coal, is fed through' a duct 2 and air in the form of a cyclone through tangential slits 4. A gyratory motion is imparted to the fuel bed and the gases produced and secondary currents 16 formed. The upper layer of fuel sinks to the bottom of the furnace and in its place glowing fuel rises from below. Further nozzles 5 arranged tangentially, or in part axially, supply extra air. Fig. 3 shows another arrangement in which a gyratory motion below a plate 19 separates out heavier particles of slag and ashes, while the finer particles are separated out by the stronger cyclone above the plate. Further nozzles may be added to the lower chamber. Air supplied through the nozzles 4 completes the combustion of the gases and also cools them. Projections may be provided in the chamber walls to hold a layer of slag on which particles of combustible are burnt. The top 8 of the combustion chamber and the gas-escape pipe 9 are kept clear of slag by scavenging air admitted through nozzles 10, 11. Fluid slag passes into a hopper 12 which is provided with jets of water. Pressure here is regulated by a damper 14. The wall of the chamber 3 may be jacketted for air, steam or water cooling. The duct 2 may be axially displaceable. Fuel particles which have become separated out in the upper part of the chamber 3 may be returned to the fuel bed by a blower. Tangential outlet slits may be used for the extraction of these particles. Openings 20 are provided for the downward flow of flue dust.
