Abstract

649,578. Gas-produces. GAS RESEARCH BOARD and DENT, F. J. April 15, 1947, No. 9988. [Class 55(i)] Solid carbonaceous material is gasified whilst suspended in a current of oxygen or air and steam, in two zones, a part of the material being completely gasified in the first zone whilst being conveyed by the whole of the gas mixture, or by a portion thereof exceeding that required for the gasification to be effected in the said zone, the resultant hot gaseous mixture being delivered into the second zone in which gasification is continued upon the remainder of the material in suspension under such conditions that the further decomposition of steam effects a desirable reduction in the temperature of the gas leaving the second zone, the ungasified carbonaceous material being separated from the gas and returned to the first zone. When a part only of the oxygen and steam mixture is supplied to the first zone, the remainder is supplied to the second zone. The carbonaceous material which is gasified in the second zone may be suspended in and carried along in the gaseous current or it may be in a " fluidized " bed. Ash is withdrawn in liquid form from the first zone, or is removed as dust from the gases leaving that zone.
