Abstract
803,234. Gasefying solid carbonaceous fuels. GAS COUNCIL, WEST MIDLANDS GAS BOARD, DENT, F. J., and STUART, R. T. Nov. 5, 1954 [July 28, 1953], No. 20957/53. Class 55 (1). In a process for gasefying particulate solid fuels by entraining them in a stream of air or oxygen, and steam and operated at such a temperature that liquid slag is produced, the gases formed are cooled by injecting into them particulate carbonaceous material in a proportion sufficient to cool the gases, the carbonaceous material is separated from the gases, cooled by partially reacting it with steam and/or carbon dioxide in a separate vessel and reintroduced into the hot gases. As shown in the drawing, particulate fuel, steam and oxygen are injected by lines 1, 2 and 3 respectively into an elongated zone 4 in the lower part of which the fuel is gasefied, liquid slag being withdrawn at 5. Carbonaceous material is added to the gases at 9 and is separated from the cooled gases in cyclone 11, the gases leave by outlet 12 and the separated material passes to a fluidized zone 6 in which it is cooled by reaction with steam and/or carbon dioxide admitted at 8. Gas produced in zone 6 plus excess steam and/or carbon dioxide are used as gasefying agents in the gasefication in zone 4. Fresh carbonaceous material is added to zone 6 by pipe 16 and excess material may be added to supply some preheated carbonaceous material for gasefication in the lower part of zone 4. Heat exchange between the hot gases from zone 4 and the steam and/or carbon dioxide for zone 6 or the air for zone 4 when air is used may be arranged. The gasefication may be effected at pressures up to 20 atmospheres and the gases are cooled from about 1300‹ C. at the point where the cooling carbonaceous material is introduced to about 800-850‹ C. in leaving the system.
