Abstract
A process for the production of synthesis gas or clean fuel gas, by partial oxidation of a feed comprising a dispersion of particulate carbon in a liquid hydrocarbon fuel with a free oxygen-containing gas, in an unfilled gas generator of free flow, at a temperature of about 1300 to 3000ºF (705 to 1650ºC) and a pressure of approximately 1 to 250 atmospheres, to produce an effluent gas stream consisting of H2, CO, CO2, H2O and entrained particulate carbon, the procedure of which is characterized in that the effluent gas stream is cooled in a cooling zone to a temperature of about 300 to 900ºF (149 to 482ºC) but above the dew point of the water in the effluent gas stream and simultaneously the entrained particulate carbon is separated by discharging the effluent gas stream directly into a mass of a hot immersion fluid comprising a carbon dispersion in p articles in a hot liquid hydrocarbon fuel and a clean gas stream consisting of H2, CO, CO2 and H2O is recovered; at least a part of the hot immersion fluid is cooled to a temperature of about 300 to 859ºF (149 to 455ºC) by direct heat exchange and at least a part of the resulting chilled immersion fluid is recycled to the cooling zone; and a part of the hot immersion fluid or a part of the cooled immersion fluid is introduced into the gas generator as at least part of the feed.
