326,227. Carpmael, A., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Dec. 1, 1928. Producers.-In the continuous production of carbon monoxide from carbon and oxygen or gases containing at least 95 per cent oxygen, the gas enters the the generator 1 through a cooled nozzle 5 with a minimum velocity of 30 metres per second, so that the combustion zone 6 is blown awav from the nozzle. A second zone 7, in which the carbon dioxide is reduced to carbon monoxide, is formed round the zone 6. The ash from the coke is blown through a cylinder of perforated iron plate and the outlet 3 from the generator, and is separated from the carbon monoxide by washing with water. Vaporized slag combines with the sulphur in the coke, to which may be added a small quantity of a basic substance such as quicklime.
