Abstract

Hydrogen is produced by passing methane through a bed of hot porous "virgin" coke, i.e. coke which has not previously come into contact with water or air. The coke may be produced from a mixture of coal and lignite. Oxides or salts of iron, aluminium, tungsten or molybdenum may be added to the coke, or the raw material used in the production thereof. The coke may be used immediately after it is formed in a coking plant. The methane may be admixed with steam which reacts with carbon deposited during the decomposition to produce hydrogen and carbon monoxide. It may also be admixed with air so as to burn the deposited carbon and provide the heat for the decomposition. Alternatively air and methane may be passed through the coke alternately.
