Abstract

A carbon-monoxide-containing gas, e.g. producer gas, is made by reacting at elevated temperature a solid combustible carbonaceous material, e.g. coal, coke or charcoal, with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas in which the proportion of carbon dioxide in the gas normally obtained with a given set of reaction conditions is suppressed by effecting the reaction in the presence of a halogen and/or a non-metallic halogen compound in at least a "critical quantity" (i.e. the quantity of the halogen and/or halogen compound below which substantially no improvement in yield of carbon monoxide is obtained). The halogen and/or halogen compound, e.g. hydrogen chloride, hydrogen bromide and carbon-tetrachloride, may be provided in the oxygen or oxygen-containing gas, and the latter may comprise air and oxygen or oxygen and carbon-monoxide, e.g. derived previously from the process. The carbon - monoxide - containing gas may subsequently be treated with a solution of an alkali hydroxide, e.g. caustic soda.
