Abstract
In the shaft furnace production of calcium carbide from calcereous material containing calcium oxide as such or as hydroxide or carbonate and solid carbonaceous fuel consisting substantially of carbon, a ratio of the solid reactants, expressed as calcium oxide to carbon, of between 1 : 4 and 1 : 2 is employed. The high temperature required in the process is provided by an oxygen-containing blast which burns a portion of the fuel, resulting in the production of an inflammable gas which escapes through the top of the furnace and a layer of molten carbide in the lower part of the furnace which is discharged therefrom continuously or intermittently. Low exhaust gas temperatures of 80-200 DEG C. may be obtained. According to the example, using a charge consisting of a mixture of 80 kg. of coke and 55 kg. of limestone (CaO : C of about 2 : 5) and a blast consisting of 77 per cent of technical oxygen and 23 per cent of steam, a furnace temperature of 2650 DEG C. and an inflammable gas temperature of 180 DEG C. was obtained. The resultant carbide yielded 240 l. of acetylene per kg. of carbide.
