Abstract

In the manufacture of sponge iron by gas obtained from the gasification of carbonaceous material in a shaft furnace operated by passing oxygen-enriched air into the lower part of the shaft to give a temperature of 1000 to 1400 DEG C in the hottest part, part of the gas is withdrawn from the hottest part and passed, without cooling, into contact with iron ore, the remainder of the producer gas being withdrawn from the top of the shaft. The residual gas from the ore reduction may be burned to preheat the air or oxygen, or may be mixed with the remainder of the producer gas, or may be used in the preparation of synthetic hydrocarbons.
