Abstract
Titanium tetraiodide is produced by reacting titanium carbide with gaseous iodine at an elevated temperature (1100 DEG C). The carbide is formed by the reaction of the dioxide with carbon at about 1050 DEG C, preferably 1300 DEG to 1800 DEG C, the reaction of the lower temperatures being conducted under a vacuum. The process is preferably carried out in an electric resistance furnace and with a graphite furnace lining. Specifications 662,577, 662,579, 698,232, 698,234, 698,235 and 698,236, [Group II], are referred to.ALSO:Pure titanium is produced by subjecting titanium carbide to the action of gaseous iodine at an elevated temperature to produce titanium tetraiodide and contacting the titanium tetraiodide in vapour form with a heated surface at a temperature in the range 1100 DEG C to 1700 DEG C. The carbide is produced by reaction of carbon and the dioxide. Specifications 662,577, 662,579, [both in Group III], 698,232, 698,234, 698,235 and 698,236 are referred to.
