Abstract
For the thermal dissociation of titanium tetraiodide to produce metallic titanium (see Group II), the traiodide is produced by passing gaseous iodine into contact with titanium-bearing material at a temperature above the boiling point of the tetraiodide. The gaseous product thus formed is either fractionally cooled, or fractionally distilled (preferably at 150 DEG C to 379 DEG C at a reduced pressure) to recover the pure tetraiodide. The iodine liberated from the dissociated tetraiodide is recycled. Specifications 662,577, 662,579, 698,233, 698,234, 698,235 and 698,236, [Group II], are referred to.ALSO:Pure titanium is produced by passing a preformed gaseous product consisting essentially of titanium tetraiodide into contact with a surface heated to a temperature in the range of 1100 DEG C-1700 DEG C. The deposition surface may be of tungsten or titanium. The tetraiodide is preferably formed by passing gaseous iodine into contact with titanium-bearing material at a temperature above the boiling point of the tetraiodide. The gaseous product thus formed is either fractionally cooled, or fractionally distilled to recover the pure tetraiodide. The liberated iodine is recycled.
