Abstract
Titanium tetraiodide is produced in pure form by forming substantially pure titanium dioxide from the ore, reducing (preferably with carbon) to form a relatively crude titanium-bearing metal product, reacting with gaseous iodine to form a titanium tetraiodide-bearing product, and fractionating to purify the tetraiodide. The reduction is preferably effected between 1300 DEG C and 1800 DEG C and in the lower part of the range is preferably carried out under vacuum. The preferred apparatus is an electrically heated resistance furnace lined with graphite. Specifications 662,577, 662,579, 698,232, 698,233, 698,235 and 698,236, [Group II], are referred to.ALSO:Pure titanium is produced by dissociating pure titanium tetraiodide, the tetraiodide being obtained from titanium bearing ore by producing substantially pure titanium dioxide, reducing the dioxide to provide a relatively crude metallic titanium, reacting with iodine to obtain a titanium tetraiodide product and fractionating to purify the tetraiodide. The titanium dioxide may be reduced by carbon at temperatures of from 1300 DEG C to 1800 DEG C, preferably under a vacuum with temperatures in the lower part of the range.
